Impasto II
Broad palette-knife slabs of saturated pigment press against one another with no negative space left to breathe. Cobalt and violet crowd the upper register, a spine of red and hot magenta cuts diagonally through the centre, and the lower two-thirds resolve into cadmium yellow and orange. The raised edges of each stroke catch a hard raking light, so the surface reads as sculpture as much as image.

Behind the artwork
Part of the Impasto series, in which the physical language of thickly loaded oil paint — ridges, drag marks, canvas tooth pushing through — is built entirely in the digital studio and pushed past what a real knife could hold.
