Where Impasto II is chaotic, this piece is ordered: rows of overlapping tongue-shaped strokes descend the canvas like roof tiles or fish scales, each one dragged downward and left with a bright lip of paint at its edge. The colour marches across the spectrum from marigold and vermilion on the left, through hot pink and violet, into a deep teal and ultramarine corner.
